AGM Battery Overview

What Is an EFB Battery?

EFB stands for Enhanced Flooded Battery. It is an improved type of flooded lead-acid automotive battery designed to handle more frequent charging and discharging than a basic conventional starting battery.

EFB batteries are commonly used in selected vehicles with entry-level or moderate automatic start-stop systems. They may also be specified for vehicles that place greater electrical demand on the battery during everyday driving.

An EFB battery may support:

  • More frequent engine restarts
  • Increased charge-and-discharge cycling
  • Electrical accessories operating while the engine is stopped
  • Improved charge acceptance
  • Greater durability under partial-state-of-charge operation
  • More demanding driving patterns than a standard starting battery

EFB describes the battery’s internal technology. It does not identify one physical size or guarantee compatibility with a particular vehicle.

What Are the Benefits of an EFB Car Battery?

An EFB battery may offer several advantages over a basic conventional flooded battery when installed in a compatible vehicle.

Improved Cycling Capability

EFB batteries are designed to withstand more frequent charging and discharging.

Better Charge Acceptance

They may recover energy more efficiently than a basic conventional battery when used with a compatible charging system.

Start-Stop Compatibility

EFB batteries can support selected automatic start-stop systems.

Greater Durability in Urban Driving

Frequent stops, restarts and short trips can place increased demand on the battery. EFB construction is intended to handle this use better than a basic starting battery.

Improved Partial-Charge Operation

EFB batteries are designed to perform more effectively during repeated periods when the battery is not maintained at a full state of charge.

Familiar Flooded-Battery Format

EFB batteries retain flooded lead-acid construction while adding internal enhancements for more demanding use.

EFB Car Battery Guide

Why Do Some Start-Stop Vehicles Use EFB Batteries?

Automatic start-stop systems switch the engine off during selected stops and restart it when the driver moves again.

During the period when the engine is off, the battery may continue powering:

  • Lights
  • Audio and infotainment
  • Climate-control functions
  • Safety systems
  • Vehicle computers
  • Other electrical accessories

The battery must then provide power for another engine restart.

This repeated operation places more cycling demand on the battery than conventional vehicle use. EFB batteries are designed to handle this increased workload in selected start-stop systems.

Not every start-stop vehicle uses EFB technology. Vehicles with more advanced energy-management systems or heavier electrical demands may require an AGM battery instead.

What Types of Vehicles May Use an EFB Battery?

EFB batteries may be specified for selected vehicles with moderate start-stop and electrical demands.

Possible applications include selected:

  • Vehicles with basic automatic start-stop systems
  • Compact passenger cars
  • Sedans
  • Hatchbacks
  • Crossovers
  • Utility vehicles
  • Light commercial vehicles
  • Vehicles with increased accessory use
  • Vehicles designed for frequent urban driving
  • Vehicles originally equipped with an EFB battery

This list provides general guidance only.

The correct battery technology must be confirmed using the vehicle specification, existing battery label and manufacturer requirements.

Is an EFB Battery Interchangeable With an AGM Battery?

No. EFB and AGM batteries should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.

Replacing EFB With AGM

An AGM battery may be an acceptable upgrade in selected vehicles originally equipped with EFB technology, but only when the following are confirmed:

  • Physical size
  • Terminal orientation
  • Mounting system
  • Capacity
  • Starting specifications
  • Charging compatibility
  • Battery-management requirements
  • Manufacturer approval

Replacing AGM With EFB

An AGM battery should not normally be replaced with an EFB battery. Doing so may reduce cycling performance and may not meet the vehicle’s electrical requirements.

Is an EFB Battery a Deep-Cycle Battery?

An automotive EFB battery is primarily designed for vehicle starting and increased cycling associated with selected start-stop systems.

It should not automatically be treated as a dedicated deep-cycle battery for applications such as:

  • Off-grid energy storage
  • Solar battery banks
  • Repeated full discharge
  • Continuous accessory power
  • Marine house loads
  • Recreational power systems

Although EFB batteries can tolerate more cycling than basic starting batteries, repeated deep discharge may still cause premature deterioration.

Use a battery designed specifically for the intended application.

How Should an EFB Battery Be Charged?

An EFB battery should be charged using equipment and settings confirmed as compatible with enhanced flooded battery technology.

Before charging:

  • Confirm that the battery is EFB
  • Check the battery voltage
  • Inspect the case for damage
  • Review the charger instructions
  • Select an EFB-compatible mode when available
  • Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance
  • Confirm whether the battery should remain connected
  • Charge in a suitable and ventilated area

Do not use a universal charging time or voltage assumption. Charging requirements can vary according to the battery, charger, temperature and manufacturer.

Does Driving Recharge an EFB Battery?

The vehicle’s alternator or charging system helps maintain the EFB battery while the engine is running.

However, normal driving may not fully restore a deeply discharged battery.

Charging performance depends on:

  • Depth of discharge
  • Battery condition
  • Driving duration
  • Vehicle electrical load
  • Alternator output
  • Battery-management strategy
  • Temperature
  • Charging-system condition

Modern vehicles may vary charging output according to battery condition, vehicle demand and operating strategy.

A deeply discharged EFB battery may require controlled charging with compatible equipment before its condition can be properly tested.

AGM Battery Technology

How Does an EFB Battery Work?

An EFB battery uses the same basic lead-acid operating principle as a conventional flooded battery, but its internal components are designed to support more demanding use.

Liquid Electrolyte

EFB batteries contain liquid electrolyte, unlike AGM batteries where the electrolyte is absorbed into glass-fiber separators.

Enhanced Plate Design

Manufacturers may use improved plate materials, coatings or construction methods to increase cycling durability and charge acceptance.

Improved Separators

Enhanced separator systems may help stabilize the active material and improve battery performance during repeated charging cycles.

Greater Cycling Resistance

EFB batteries are designed to tolerate more frequent discharge and recharge activity than basic conventional starting batteries.

Start-Stop Support

The improved construction allows the battery to support selected vehicles that repeatedly switch the engine off and restart it during normal driving.

What Are the Limitations of an EFB Battery?

EFB technology is not automatically suitable for every vehicle.

Higher Price Than a Basic Battery

EFB batteries generally cost more than comparable conventional flooded starting batteries.

Lower Cycling Capability Than AGM

Although EFB batteries improve upon conventional designs, AGM batteries are generally intended for more demanding cycling and electrical applications.

Vehicle Compatibility Requirements

A vehicle designed for AGM technology should not automatically be fitted with an EFB battery.

Deep Discharge Damage

Repeated severe discharge can still damage an EFB battery and reduce its useful service life.

Flooded Construction

EFB batteries contain liquid electrolyte and must be handled, mounted and charged correctly.

How Is an EFB Battery Tested?

Testing an EFB battery may involve more than checking its voltage.

Visual Inspection

The case, terminals, cables, vents and mounting should be reviewed for visible concerns.

Resting Voltage

A voltage reading may indicate the battery’s current state but does not confirm its starting capability by itself.

Starting Performance

The battery’s voltage and response during engine cranking can provide useful information.

Electronic Testing

Compatible battery testers may assess conductance or estimate battery condition using the correct battery technology and rating.

Charge Retention

A battery that loses charge shortly after charging may be weak or affected by a vehicle electrical problem.

Charging-System Check

The alternator, wiring and energy-management system may need to be checked when repeated discharge occurs.
